How to convert a fraction to a decimal number?

To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number).
 

Method 1: Direct Division (Most Common)

Example 1: Convert ³/₄ to a decimal.

1. Divide the numerator by the denominator:
3 ÷ 4 = 0.75

Answer: ³/₄ = 0.75
 
Example 2: Convert ⁵/₈ to a decimal.

5 ÷ 8 = 0.625

Answer: ⁵/₈ = 0.625
 

Method 2: Long Division (When It Doesn't Divide Evenly)

Example: Convert ²/₃ to a decimal.
  1. Set up long division: 2 ÷ 3
  2. 3 goes into 2 zero times → 0.
  3. Add a decimal point and a zero → 20
  4. 3 goes into 20 six times (18), remainder 2 → 0.6
  5. Bring down another 0 → 20
  6. 3 goes into 20 six times again (18), remainder 2 → 0.66
  7. The remainder repeats → it continues as 0.666...
Answer: ²/₃ = 0.6̅ (or 0.666... recurring)

 

The Shortcut: Power of 10

If the denominator is a number that can easily be multiplied to become 10, 100, or 1, 000, you can skip long division.

  1. Multiply the denominator to turn it into a power of 10.
  2. Multiply the numerator by that same number to keep the fraction equivalent.
  3. Write it out: Move the decimal point in the numerator to the left based on how many zeros are in your new denominator.

Example: Convert 3/5 to a decimal

  • Multiply the bottom by 2 to get 10.
  • Multiply the top by 2 to get 6.
  • The fraction is now 6/10.
  • Result: 0.6
