The mean solar time of the longitude (0°) of the Royal Greenwich Observatory in England is known as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Astronomers decided to adopt GMT in 1925, therefore the astronomical day started at midnight, the same time as the civil day. However, there was some uncertainty over terminology, and the Greenwich meridian's standard time was renamed as Universal Time. The Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), a modified version of Universal Time, is still widely used.

There is no difference in GMT between summer and winter time.
