What Is the Image to Text Converter?

The Image to Text Converter is a browser-based tool that reads images and extracts the written or printed words inside them as plain, copyable text. It uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) — the same family of technology found in document scanners and digitisation workflows — but runs entirely on your device, so no file ever leaves your browser.

You can upload a single photo or drop in a whole batch at once. The tool handles everything from crisp screenshots to phone snaps of printed pages, supporting over a dozen languages out of the box.

Features of the Converter

Batch Conversion

Upload up to hundreds of images in one go. Two parallel OCR workers process files concurrently so you're never stuck waiting for a queue.

100 % Private

All recognition runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly. Your images are never sent to a server.

12 + Languages

English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese (Simplified), Japanese, Arabic, Hindi, Korean and more.

Multiple Formats

Accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, WEBP, BMP, and TIFF. Drag and drop or use the file browser.

One-Click Copy & Download

Copy extracted text to the clipboard instantly, or download it as a .txt file — per file or all results at once.

Responsive Design

Works equally well on desktop, tablet, and mobile. No app installation required.

Use Cases of a Photo to Text Converter

OCR bridges the gap between the physical and digital worlds. Here are the most common scenarios where this tool saves time.

Students & Researchers

Digitise textbook pages, lecture slides, or handwritten notes for easy search, editing, and citation.

Office & Administration

Convert scanned contracts, invoices, or forms into editable Word or PDF documents without retyping.

Developers & Data Teams

Extract structured data from screenshots, UI mockups, or legacy printed reports for downstream processing.

Writers & Journalists

Pull quotes from physical press releases, book pages, or printed transcripts without manual transcription.

Accessibility

Convert image-only PDFs or scanned pages into readable text that screen readers and assistive tools can process.

E-commerce & Cataloguing

Extract product information from packaging photos or printed catalogues to populate databases quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Convert Scanned Handwriting To Text?

Upload your handwritten image using the file browser or drag and drop. Tesseract.js will attempt to recognise the characters automatically.

For best results with handwriting:

  • Use high-resolution images (300 DPI or above if scanning).
  • Ensure good contrast — dark ink on a light background works best.
  • Avoid heavily stylised or cursive scripts; printed handwriting recognises more reliably.
  • Select the correct language before uploading.

How Does an Image to Text Converter Work?

The converter uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR), a process that analyses pixel patterns in an image to identify letters, numbers, and symbols.

  1. Pre-processing — the image is converted to greyscale and contrast is enhanced.
  2. Layout analysis — regions of text are identified and segmented from graphics or backgrounds.
  3. Character recognition — an LSTM neural network (inside Tesseract) predicts each character.
  4. Post-processing — the raw predictions are assembled into words, lines, and paragraphs.

Is The Extracted Text Accurate?

Accuracy depends heavily on image quality. Under good conditions — clear typography, high resolution, good lighting — modern Tesseract achieves accuracy comparable to commercial OCR engines.

Factors that reduce accuracy: low resolution, heavy compression artifacts, skewed or rotated text, unusual fonts, mixed languages in the same image, or faint ink. Always proofread the output before using it in critical documents.

How to Copy Text from PDF Images?

If a PDF contains scanned pages (i.e. images rather than selectable text), standard copy-paste won't work. The recommended workflow is:

  1. Export the PDF page(s) as PNG or JPG images (most PDF viewers offer "Save as image" or "Export").
  2. Upload the exported images to this converter.
  3. Copy or download the extracted text from the results panel.

What Are The Best Ways For Text Extraction From Images?

  • Maximise resolution — scan at 300 DPI or higher; zoom in before screenshotting small text.
  • Choose the right language — selecting the correct language model significantly improves accuracy.
  • Ensure contrast — avoid photos taken in low light or with shadows across the text.
  • Keep pages flat — curved book spines distort characters at the edges.
  • Avoid heavy compression — JPEG artifacts around characters confuse the recogniser; PNG is preferred.

All processing happens locally in your browser. No files are uploaded to any server.
