which can be simplified to

Percentage Change= (V2 – V1)/ V1 x 100

Where:

  • The final value, V2, is the current value or the value at the end of the period.
  • The initial value V1 is the original value or the value at the beginning of the period.

For example, let's say you want to calculate the percentage change in the price of a stock from 50 to 60.

Percentage change = ((60 - 50) / 50) x 100 = 20%

This means the stock price has increased by 20% from 50 to 60.

 

How to calculate percentage changes?

Example 1: Percentage change between two prices

What is the percentage change for a latte at two coffee shops price for a latte at competitor 1 is $3.25, and the price for a latte at competitor 2 is $3,75.

So, V1 = 3.25, and V2: $3.75

Let’s use the formula:

Percentage Change= (V2 – V1)/ V1 x 100

($3.75-$3.25)/ $3.25 x 100

0.50/3.25 x 100

0.1538 x 100

15.38% change or an increase of 15.38% from $3.25 to $3.75.

 

Example 2: Percentage change between two numbers.

A shop had 75 blue shirts. After the sale, 50 blue shirts are still available. What is the percentage change from 75 to 50 shirts?

In this case, V1 = 75, and V2 = 50

Let’s use the formula:

Percentage Change= (V2 – V1)/ V1 x 100

(50-75)/ 75 x 100

-25/75 x 100

-1/3 x 100

-0.3333 x 100

= -33.33%

Therefore, the stock from 75 to 50 shirts represents a -33.33% change or 50 represents a decrease of 33.33% in the stock from 75 as initial value.
