Percentage Off Calculator

What means percent off?

"Percent off" is a discount or reduction in price expressed as a percentage of the original price. It indicates how much you'll save on a product or service.

For example, if a shirt is originally $100 and there's a 20% off sale, you'll get a discount of 20% of $100, which is $20. So, you'll pay $100 - $20 = $80.

How to calculate the percent off?

To calculate the discount, multiply the original price by the percentage off, then subtract the result from the original price.

  • Discount = Original Price x (Percent Off / 100)
  • New Price = Original Price - Discount

Using the example above ($100 shirt with 20% off sale price):

  • Discount = $100 x (20 / 100) = $20
  • New Price = $100 - $20 = $80

The alternative formula to calculate the percent off, in one go is:

Final price = Original Price x ((100 - %Off) / 100)

Final price = $100 x (100-20/100) = $100 x (80/100) = $100 x 0.80 = $80

So, "percent off" is a convenient way to express a discount, making it easy to understand how much you'll save on a purchase.

Percent Off Example Calculations

Example 1 : How to calculate 20% percent off for a smartphone costing $700?

Step 1: Let’s start solving this exercise by identifying the discounted amount.

Discount = Original Price x (Percent Off / 100)

Where $700 is the smartphone cost, and 20% is the discount

$700 x 20/100

$700 x 0.20

$140 if the discount

Step 2: Now, let’s use the second formula to identify the sale price.

New Price = Original Price - Discount

New price = $700 - $140 = $560

Therefore, a discount of 20% on a smartphone costing $700 discounted, results in $140 savings and a new price of $560.

Example 2: How much is X% off $Y?

During the sales period, a pair of jeans is 25% off its original price of $200. What will the new price of the jeans be?

Final price = Original Price x ((100 - %Off) / 100)

$200 x ((100 - 25)/100)

$200 x (75/100)

$200 x 0.75

$150

Therefore, the sale price for a pair of jeans with the original price of 20% off is $150.

Example 3: What is the percent off between two prices?

Let’s say you have a coupon of $10, and you plan to buy a gift costing $90. What will be the percent off and the saved amount?

Since your gift is costing $90 and you subract your coupon of $10, then you will pay $80. To calculate the percent off, let’s use the following formula:

Percent off = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100.

Where Part = 10$ and Whole is $90 then we have:

10/90 x 100

0,1111 x 100

11,11%

Therefore, there is an 11,11$ percent discount on a gift that will cost $80, down from $90.

What is the difference between Percent-Off vs Discount?

While often used interchangeably, "Percent-Off" and "Discount" have slightly different meanings.

  • Discount refers to the actual amount or value deducted from the original price of a product or service. It's the absolute amount you'll save. For example, "20 off" or "50 discount".
  • Percent-Off, on the other hand, is a percentage of the original price that's deducted. It's a relative measure that indicates the proportion of the original price that's being discounted. For example, "20% off" or "15% discount".

To illustrate the difference:

  • A $20 discount is an absolute value, whereas 20% off is a relative value that depends on the original price.
  • If the original price is 100, 20% off means a 20 discount. But if the original price is 500, 20% off means a 100 discount.

While both terms indicate a price reduction, "Percent-Off" provides a relative measure, whereas "Discount" provides an absolute value.
