Time between two dates

The time and date duration calculator calculates the amount of days, hours, and minutes that spans between two dates and times.

How to calculate date & time duration?

To calculate the time duration within a period, you need to enter the start and end times, and the online calculator does the rest automatically. You will get the answer in hours, minutes, and decimal hours.

To calculate the date differences between two dates and times, add the start date and start time, then add the end date and end time, then click calculate. You will get the duration in days, hours, and minutes. Simple.

Examples of how to calculate time differences?

You need to know the age or want to determine the number of hours a flight will take or how much time it took to finalize a certain task.

1. Calculating how long it will take

Let’s say you have a trip, and you go by flight, bus, train, car, or ferry. You know at what hour the journey starts, and when it will arrive at the destination. To calculate the number of hours between the two dates, add them in the start and end fields, and the calculator does the rest for you. Let’s say it leaves at 7:30 AM and arrives at 1PM. It will be easy to see that the duration will be 5 hours and 30 minutes.

2. Calculating the time duration

When you want to identify the time duration in work hours you used for a specific project, once again use the same calculator. Let’s say you have started at 8:20 and ended at 11:05 for a specific task, then you know you can count 2:45 for that project.

3. How much time until

If you’re interested in calculating a countdown to a specific date and time, once again, this free tool will help with the exact answer. Just by adding today’s date and the date and time when the event takes place, you will have the time and date in front of you.

Let’s say you want to calculate the time from August 3 at 10:00 AM until September 21 at 14:00, when you have your annual event at work. The system will provide a clear result: 49 days, 4 hours, and 20 minutes.

4. Time elapsed calculator

When you want to count the elapsed time or the time that has passed during an event, let’s say, a chess match, a marathon, a winter, or the completion of a complex project in days, minutes, and hours, once you have identified the start and end times, finding the result will be super easy.

We have 86 days from midnight on December 21, 2024, to midnight on March 20, 2025.

Calculate the duration between two times

Calculating the duration between two times is a straightforward process, even in cases where it may seem more complex. We will provide several examples and the steps needed to complete the process, ensuring that anyone can confidently handle such time calculations.

1. Find the start and end times.

We will use these two variables to handle the calculation, and depending on various conditions, we can handle it differently.

2. Convert the times to a 24-hour format

If the times have yet to be converted to 24 hours, then to the PM times, add 12 hours, and the AM times remain the same.As an example, 3:30PM becomes 3:30 + 12 = 15:30 in 24 hour format.

3. Subtract the end times from the start time

At this step, we can use a simple formula: Time Difference = End Time – Start Time.

This straightforward approach should put you at ease when tackling the calculation.
Yet, you must note that if the number of minutes in the start time is bigger than the end time, you will need to “borrow“ 1 hour, or the equivalent of 60 minutes. Otherwise, the calculation is a simple subtraction.

a. The number of minutes in the end time is smaller than the start time
To calculate the difference between 8:30 AM and 6:15 PM.
In this case, in 24-hour format, 8:30 AM stays 8:30, and 6:15 PM becomes 6:15 + 12 = 18:15.
Now let’s calculate the difference:
18-8 = 10 hours
15-30 = -15 minutes (30 minutes is longer than 15 minutes)
If we ‘borrow’ 1 hour from the 10-hour difference, we will remain at 9 hours, and -15 + 60 minutes = 45 minutes.
This means our result is now 9 hours and 45 minutes.

b. The number of minutes in the end time is larger or equal to the start time
Let’s take, for example, a start time of 7:00 AM and an end time of 3:30 PM.
Here, 7:00 AM remains the same, and 3:30 PM becomes 15:30.
Let’s calculate the difference between start and end times:
15-7 = 8 hours
30 - 0 = 30 minutes.

So, the time difference between 7:00 AM and 3:30 PM is 8:30 or 8 hours and 30 minutes.

Some additional examples:

1. It’s 10 AM. What is the time difference until 3:45 PM?

We know that the start time is 10 AM and the end time is 3:45 PM

Converting them into a 24-hour format will lead to 10:00 and 15:45

15-10=5 hours

45-0=45 minutes.

Result: 5 hours and 45 minutes.

2. It’s 4:17 PM. How long until 10:09 PM?

Let’s convert the two numbers to 24-hour format as they are in PM: 4:17 + 12 = 16:17

10:09 + 12 = 22:09.

Let’s calculate the time difference between the end and the start time

22-16=6 hours

9-17 =-8 minutes

In this case, we need to ‘borrow’ 1 hour from the 6-hour difference.
-8 + 60 minutes = 52 minutes
6-1 = 5 hours
The result is then 5 hours and 52 minutes

3. It’s 2:20 PM, and you want to calculate the time difference until 12:17 AM the next day.

Let's convert the numbers to 24 hours.

2 :20 + 12h = 14:20

12:17 remains the same, as AM times don’t change in the 24-hour conversion.

In this case, it is easier to calculate the time difference from midnight to the start time. And then from the end time to midnight.

Midnight = 00.00 or 24:00.

For this calculation, we will use 24:00 as the 24-hour value

24-14 = 10 hours

0-20 = -20 minutes

We borrow 1 hour (the equivalent is 60 minutes) from the 10-hour difference and remain with 9 hours.

-20 + 60 minutes = 40 minutes

Therefore, the result is 9 hours and 40 minutes between 2:20 PM and 12:17 AM the next day.
