What is this WebP to PNG tool?
Ever saved a picture and found out it's a .webp file that half your apps refuse to open? This tool fixes that. Give it a WebP and it hands you back a PNG that works in pretty much everything: design software, slides, documents, game engines, old photo editors.
How to convert WebP to PNG
When should you convert WebP to PNG?
WebP is great on websites, but it isn't welcome everywhere. Reach for a PNG when you run into one of these:
How to convert multiple images at once
Select a whole folder's worth of WebP files at once (Ctrl or Cmd + A in the file picker), or drag them all onto the drop box together. Each one gets its own row with its own preview and file size.
When they're ready, press Download all and you'll get a single ZIP. Switch the transparency option and every image updates on the spot.
Does this tool preserve transparency?
Yes. By default, any see-through areas in your WebP stay see-through in the PNG, including soft edges and semi-transparent shadows. You'll see a checkerboard behind the preview thumbnail wherever the image is transparent.
If you'd rather have a solid background, turn off Keep transparency and choose a color. That's handy when you're sending the file to something that doesn't handle transparent PNGs well.
Why is this tool better than the others?
- Nothing gets uploaded. The conversion runs on your own device, so private images stay private.
- No waiting around. No upload queue, no progress bar crawling across the screen.
- No limits or nagging. No daily caps, no watermark, no account, no "upgrade" pop-ups.
- Transparency stays intact. Keep it by default, or fill it with any color you like.
- Built for batches. Convert one file or fifty, then grab them all in a single ZIP.
What is the WebP image format?
WebP is an image format Google released in 2010 to make websites lighter. It squeezes images into much smaller files than older formats, and it can also handle transparency and simple animations, which means one format can do the job of JPG, PNG and GIF. Browsers love it. A lot of other software is still catching up.
What is a PNG?
PNG is a lossless format from the mid-1990s. It keeps every pixel exactly as it was, so text, logos, screenshots and graphics stay crisp, and it supports full transparency. The trade-off is file size: photos saved as PNG can be a lot heavier than the same image in WebP.
What is the difference between WebP and PNG?
The biggest difference is how they compress. PNG is always lossless, while WebP can be lossy or lossless. A lossy WebP is usually far smaller than a PNG, but it has already thrown away some detail. Converting it to PNG won't bring that detail back. What you gain is compatibility: PNG opens almost anywhere, and the pixels stay exactly as they are from then on.
| WebP | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy or lossless | Lossless only |
| File size | Usually much smaller | Usually larger, especially for photos |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| Animation | Yes | No (the animated APNG variant is rare) |
| Works everywhere | Modern browsers and apps | Practically everything |
